Throughout his career, Dr. Richard has led schools in achieving remarkable improvements. At Florence High School, he implemented a 1:1 digital learning environment, making it one of the first high schools in Arizona to provide laptops to every student. Under his leadership, the school earned an “A” rating and received the ASU Lead & Inspire Award. Later, at Westwood High School in Mesa, he guided a diverse student population to the district’s highest state test score gains.
In 2016, Dr. Richard took on the challenge of leading Arizona’s first-ever consolidated high school. Despite significant funding and performance hurdles, he propelled San Tan Foothills High School to unprecedented academic growth and expanded its course offerings from zero to 14 AP classes. The school became the only high school in Pinal County to offer both the AP Capstone Diploma and AVID programs.
Dr. Richard is a passionate advocate for Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), collaborative environments that shift the focus from teaching to learning. His leadership philosophy centers on the “Three A’s”—Academics, Arts, and Athletics—ensuring a holistic educational experience for all students. He is also committed to building strong community ties and celebrating school culture, as exemplified by his co-founding of the Globe High School Hall of Fame.
Driven by a deep belief in opportunity and support for every learner, Dr. Richard continues to lead with integrity, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to student success.
Superintendent's Message:
Dear Learning Community,
I am humbled and honored to serve as the superintendent of our wonderful school district with three outstanding high schools. Mohave High School, River Valley High School, and the CRUHSD Academy all have proud traditions of providing young people with opportunities to reach their highest aspirations. My goal is to continue to support our students and to celebrate their successes as we win as a school district in the 3 A’s… Academics, the Arts, and Athletics. Academics are the mind of a school, the Arts are the soul of a school, and athletics are the heart of a school. Celebrating our students as they reach for the stars in these areas will build positive cultures on our campuses and bring great joy to every member of our community. Winning in athletics is something you can watch by attending our school’s extra-curricular events at the Anderson Auto Group Fieldhouse!
Our district is committed to, and in the early stages of, improving the facilities at our campuses with an emphasis on school safety and school security. We will also be working to improve academically by transitioning into a Professional Learning Community (PLC). In a PLC the focus shifts from what students are being taught to what students are actually learning. When students are facing challenges, additional support is provided to meet their individual needs and teachers collaborate around student learning needs. I am confident that this approach will result in the Colorado River Union High School District becoming an A rated school district.
With summer break coming to a close, be sure to visit our school websites and be on the lookout for information about registration and other information about preparing for the start of the new school year on Wednesday, August 2nd. Working together as a community of learning we will attain the promise of CRUHSD’s new motto of Achievement For All!
Sincerely,
Dr. Richard
